Bare Mutants (Chicago)
Bare Mutants makes slo-mo Psych Pop that rises and falls like a deep breath, but also usually builds up to a more fevered huff. Marked by a ghostly aura and gauzy droning, the songs on the Chicago five-piece’s 2013 debut album, The Affliction, are structured like ’50s Pop classics, but the slow-shimmy pacing and gentle blankets of noise gives them a blurry, dizzying effect (like that slowed-down version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” the internet freaked out about for a minute). Bare Mutants is the work of Jered Gummere of the popular Garage Rock outfit The Ponys (Matador, In the Red) and also features organist/singer Jeanine O’ Toole (of Chicago’s The 1900s).
