Birds of Chicago (Chicago)
J.T. Nero and Allison Russell had crossed creative paths to great effect in their previous bands — he in JT and the Clouds, she in Po' Girl – and. ultimately, they decided to pull the trigger and join forces officially as Birds of Chicago. Although Nero's 2011 solo album Mountains/Forest could ostensibly be considered the first BOC album, the duo-and sometimes-band took their actual bow with their eponymous debut last fall, an album that clearly proved the wisdom of transforming their working relationship to a permanent entity. Nero's cracked yet passionate vocal delivery and Russell's crystal clear harmonies and leads are the perfect voiceprints for Birds of Chicago's ramshackle Folk Pop mix of authenticity and atmospheric reinvention.
