Daughter (London, U.K.)
Indie Rock/Experimental Folk
Hailing from jolly old England, Daughter isn’t exactly jolly. Think Fiona Apple but more sad and disturbed than angry and horny. Daughter was originally just one woman, Elena Tonra, on Mumford & Sons’ Communion label. Now she’s doing her music from the core of a male-heavy trio, and, at only 21 years old, is infinitely more deep and mature than any of America’s pop princesses. Listening to Daughter’s new album If You Leave will leave you sore. It’s a mix of simple acoustic wallowing and airy electric sucker punches. It’s moody and it hurts … but it is a pretty pain.
YDIIYD: James Vincent McMorrow, Plumb, Joni Mitchell does Kid A. (MB)ct still in its infancy, displaying a maturity that belies their youth.
