San Fermin (Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Chamber Pop

Freshly armed with a music degree from Yale, Ellis Ludwig-Leone secluded himself in Alberta, Canada, for six months to work on his debut album as San Fermin, a four-piece currently based in Brooklyn. If the first song from the finished work — San Fermin’s self-titled debut is set to drop just prior to MidPoint — is any indication, expect a keeper: “Sonsick” is wistful, orchestral Pop of the highest order, its dual female vocals, expressive horns and reflective lyrics conjuring a meld of Sufjan Stevens and Dirty Projectors. “It’s like a panic attack disguised as a birthday party,” Ludwig-Leone has said of the song. “I realized that the most intense moments are the ones in which conflicting emotional worlds exist inside you, equally, at once.”

YDIID: The National minus the guitar bombast, Sufjan Stevens, Dirty Projectors. (JG)
