Sidewalk Chalk (Chicago)
An MC, a vocalist, a keyboardist, a bassist, a drummer, a trumpeter, a trombonist and a tap dancer walk into a bar … and make a fresh and revolutionary sound. Sidewalk Chalk draws on the individual band members' nearly inconceivable diversity of ages and musical expertise to create a brilliant sonic hybrid encompassing the best elements of Soul, R&B, Hip Hop and Jazz. The Chicago Reader was moved to dub Sidewalk Chalk the city's Best Hip Hop Artist, but clearly their broad creative range cannot be contained by a single category. The band's 2012 debut, Corner Store, is a vibrant and scintillating introduction to an amazingly diverse group that is likely to be a potent force well beyond its hometown success.
